Trailer length in Parks/Campgrounds?

Not sure where to ask so I will ask it here. What is the most common length restriction in parks/ campgounds--specifically in California?

  • California is not like any other state - we have found. Their state parks haven't been updated like other states. If you intend to use state parks, the sites are typically small and trees aren't trimmed sufficiently. There are some exception but most are for below 30'. The above link is excellent.

Forest Service campground can accept larger RVs in some places - not all.

Private RV parks can accept any size - but not all. You need to check out each one individually.

Now...if you travel out of California, we have found with our 40' motorhome, that we have a much bigger selection of public parks to choose from - national, state, national forests, county and city. We've used them all as public parks are always our first choice.
  • We have found that 35 ft in most Calif State Parks is the limit. The new one at Crystal Cove State Park is 38 ft.
  • Our 25 footer can find a spot in most of the Forest Service and State Parks around our neck of the woods, but the more remote FS campgrounds may be a bit tight both vertically and horizontally.
  • If you are asking about national, state, and COE type campgrounds the above if true. Some will go a little larger, probably with a limited number of the longer sites. If you are asking about private RV parks then most will take 40' or longer rigs.
  • Good sound advice from Toadtoes. Check the campgrounds you intend to go to.
  • I have found that there are usually two levels of length restrictions.

The first one is mostly for smaller basic no-reservation type national forest campgrounds and will limit to no more than 17 ft (may vary up to 21ft, but most usually 17).

The second is more common to popular reservable campgrounds (state parks, etc.) and is no more than 27ft (may vary up to 30ft, but most usually 27).

If you're trying to decide on an RV length, I'd recommend going onto the recreation.gov website and looking at a range of campgrounds that you're interested in. See what the length restrictions are for them. That will give you a good idea if you need to be concerned or not.

Many folks camp happily with larger RVs and never have issues with not fitting in the campgrounds they enjoy. Others would find themselves unable to camp in their favorite spots if they don't keep to a small RV.
