So what is considered "excessive"? 65mph rating, so is 5% over OK, how about 10 or 15%? I can watch precise pressure and temperature readings that are updated constantly and the difference between driving 60 which is under the rating vs 70 which is nearly 10% over and the difference is negligible.
I can see having the tire overloaded or under inflated and running them at 85mph having an impact but I still find it hard to believe that a properly loaded and inflated tire will destroy itself barely going over the speed rating.
I think more tire failures are due to poor manufacturing of ultra cheap brands vs the actual use of the tire.
I have run my ST tires 75 and over all the time in the summer with ambient temps 90 to 100 F. Only blew one in 35+ year of towing and I think that was a nail low pressure deal. I run max pressure +5 or even 10. Over loading and under pressure is a WAY bigger deal than speed and it shows with tire temps.
Most of what you hear on tires is parroting. I ran China junk ST for a very long time. I got my first set of Maxxis tires last year. We will see how good they last.
CAUTION:
I drink out of a water hose for years too though. :B
