What most people fail to realize about this issue is that there are rotational (centrifugal) forces acting on the tire structure. These forces increase with the SQUARE of the speed. So, while 70 mph vs 65 mph is only a 7.7% increase, the centrifugal forces increase by 16%. At 72 mph the increase is 22.7%.
