traveling route 66

Took 66 through Barstow and east and the road just became potholes from hell. It follows the interstate 40 so not a big deal. Take a little side trip to Kelso, CA as its a really cool place. The nearby dunes sing to you and the restored depot is so cool.

My favorite part is Kingman, AZ to the California line though it might be a little difficult for long trailers. Check out Cool Springs and Oatman.

Another vote for EZ66 Guide. I have several sources, find this one the most useful.

Figure out how much time you want to spend. There is a lot to see along the way if you intend to soak up the history. My last run on the western Oklahoma and Texas Panhandle section was four days from El Reno to Tucumcari. It could have been more than a week, if I hadn't bypassed so many potential stops. There are other sections equally interesting, and sections where there are few reasons to stop.

I ususally use the alternative Interstate (55, 44, 40) to get around or through major metro areas, because if there we not stops you wanted to make, you will find the city street routings slow going (if still available, urban expressways greatly changed the streets and landscape).

The route through Tulsa is marked, and has historic restorations and nostalgia businesses along the 11th Sreet routing, but you'll still have to get on I-44 or I-244 to get across the Arkansas River. The route through Joplin isn't bad. But I wouldn't try to follow 66 street routings through St Louis or Oklahoma City.

Visit Bozo's auto museum in Santa Rosa New Mexico. Bozo was big in the hot rod world in the James Dean days. Met his wife and him while there, nice folks and a lot of amazing cars.

I'm also making notes from the topic. We want to do the trip also. There is so much to see and do along the way. DH ordered the EZ guide when I forwarded the conversation to him.

We want to do the trip before it becomes Disneyland if you know what I mean.

Did the whole route last year. So much to see. There are areas you can't take a trailer or wouldn't want to. Route 66: EZ66 Guide For Travelers - 3rd edition by Jerry McClanahan is an excellent book and became a bit of a bible on our trip. Don't forget to ask local folks about places along the way. They will know spots that didn't make it into the book. If you pick the right day the flat bed ford will actually be parked on the corner.
