Route 66

Have any of you taken a Route 66 trip? I know you have to get off major highways and interstates. I would love to see all the attractions. We have been through some of the towns/cities along the way and have seen a few attractions and I have seen the end of the Route in Santa Monica. But I would love to travel East to West and have time to get off the major highways and see attractions.
TIA for any comments and info.
  • There are a number of books of Route 66 travel. Usually available at a large book store. Or on line if no large bookstores convenient. Google Route 66 travel book.
  • A few years back we did Route 66 from Springfield Illinois to Needles. We purchased Tom Snyder Route 66 Traveler's Guide and Roadside Companion book(ISBN 978-0-312-64425-3). It has some small area maps and lots of Route information. Amazon
Big item to watch out for is load limits on some original bridges, height of bridges, roads that don't go through any longer with no warning and no places to turn around.
  • I would also suggest you go online and order all the travel guides from the state tourism office of all the states you will be passing through. They can be a wealth of information with localized maps for the regions of the state. The route 66 guide books are also a must. I-40 has eaten up a lot of route 66. Stop in Williams AZ and do the Grand Canyon Railroad trip and stay in the campground there. Great place to sit for a few days.
