It all depends. Often the only bridges across a river are at city locations. Or the alternative route means going on secondary streets and not on freeways or can involve a steep grade.
Time of day and day of the week makes all the difference in the world. I cannot think of a city that would be a problem on a Sunday morning and not many that would not be a problem on a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon. We avoid coming back on a Sunday afternoon as that is when the most people are returning from weekend trips and are likely to be the most insane with their driving as they are 100% focused on getting home and saving 10 minutes is worth risking life and limb of themselves, their passengers, and anyone else on the road.
