Personally I've never done a trade-in on anything because you'll always do better by selling it yourself.
In general true but not always. Had an old dakota one time blue book was $1500 and checked comparables in used car adds and give or take a couple hundred that was spot on.
After getting yanked around at one dealer, on my lunch the next day swung into a different dealer. Got the price on the new truck (I had the employee pricing so I knew what it was going in)...they offered $4,000 on trade. Called the wife and asked if she wanted white or black because I was going to sign the paperwork before they realized their mistake.
I agree with the dealer...the bottom line is all the matters...I don't want to see or hear about calculations, explaination of condition or anything else...you get the bottom line price on the new purchase...if it's agreeable, you get the bottom line price on the trade in.
- If the trade in price is good enough, you do the trade in.
- If not, you buy the new truck and keep the old to sell yourself.
The OP did right...your strongest negotiating tactic is to walk out. They might no chase you out the door but if you cave, you just handed them extra cash. Just but an upgraded used truck. They didn't chase us out the door but 5 min down the road, they called and asked if we would accept $50 over our last offer. A 5 min drive saved us $550.
