"Trust your mirrors" - I read that phrase here in a thread about solo RVing. Even when I am just driving my tow vehicle (Dodge RAM 2500 with a shell), I seem to always wish I could see more, of course, especially into the blind spots.The only practice I've developed to help out with this, is to remain constantly aware of open lanes when they exist to the left or right of me. That way I am more sure of openings in the lanes when I need to move over.Does anyone else has this problem? It is just a lack of experience (I've been towing for 2 years now - 16 total trips towing my trailer) on my part?

I have used just mirrors for decades for the most part. When towing hopefully you can make lane changes with plenty of time. Signal on then slowly move into your lane.

I don't exclusively trust my mirrors. Like a lot of other things though they are tools. I use convex mirrors, turn my head, and use good old common sense, including the awareness of what's around you. Much like you are already doing. Often, not always you can discern roughly where other vehicles are by watching for shadows. Just as often I'll see a vehicle in the left lane then they simply disappear, only to realize that they decided hold back and get behind me and hide. It's just part of towing.

Its possible for following traffic to see the mirrors of a vehicle ahead and not be in the focal area of the driver. That is called blind spot.Side cameras or blind spot add on mirrors help to detect traffic in the blind spot of normal mirrors.My coach has 6 mirrors and 3 cameras.

I installed a side view camera on my passenger side. For a class A that is a major blind spot.

I love my large tow mirrors on my truck. With the large convex mirrors I can see side traffic all the way up to the front doors. Really don’t have blind spots. I rarely turn my head much at all.

I have driven mirrors required vehicles for over 45 years. Started in 1970 with 1964 panel sided Econoline Van. Used to tow a 20’ sailboat, then drove a long wheel base 1985 Econoline for work in drove it all over western Washington, spent a lot of time in Seattle and Tacoma. Use them right and you don’t need to look over your shoulder, good way to drift into an adjacent lane.

Same here - when I look to the mirror, I can see the vehicle to the side, both in the mirror and out the window.

It still bothers me a little to now see by turning my head. I think it is just habit.

When the original poster wrote, "trust your mirrors", that is when I realized I do not trust them.

I don't trust them but I utilize them.

Using all the tools available (mirrors, looking, awareness) is the best way. Relying on one is going to create a problem.
