i don't do GPS driving directions
i will do google maps, without directions
just to see the routes in real time
i have a program called "my tracks"
what it is for is to record where and when your bike hike run etc,,
i use it when driving, records avg speed, time, elevation , location, distant traveled, top speed computed via gps points versus clock time .. etc
and it always shows me where i'm at like a GPS, but with out telling how to drive
