I like my Garmin. Has a setting for avoiding freeways. That's nice for towing short distances through town. Like your Walmart trip. Truck setting I think is for big rigs and avoids roads with weight limitations. That's probably why it takes people miles out of the way.
But I never trust them completely. I'll still print out directions for the major routes on the trip, and I use Google Earth to kinda see what I'm getting into.
Road construction is just all part of it. Can't really blame a GPS for that. Or even print maps. Add to that new construction means you'll have to hope the latest update included the new roads or exits. Where I live, I have to tell visitors to ignore GPS for a portion of their trip. New bypasses haven't been included on any GPS unit I've seen for this area.
