I've generally had good luck with my GPS. It doesn't always pick the very best route, but it usually gives a reasonable one. The maps aren't always exactly correct, but they're close. Sometimes the GPS maps don't know that you can turn left on a divided highway at certain points, or that you cannot—obviously, one needs to actually drive, and not merely slavishly follow GPS directions.
I'm also not afraid to go a different way than it says to go, if that seems better, and mute it if need be. Never the less, the Magellan is generally more adept at finding a way to things that I don't know where they are than I am working alone.
Paper maps are nice, but if you miss a turn it's a big hassle to redo the directions via a paper map, particularly if you're traveling alone. Paper maps also often don't have all the roads and intersections on them, which can make particularly city driving based on them confusing. Good luck getting un-lost when you're at the intersection of two roads, neither of which exist on your map.
My GPS does have a traffic feature that, in larger city areas, gets updated traffic and accident information via broadcast FM radio stations (I think). Sometimes it's handy and useful to route around congestion, and sometimes it merely indicates that you're stuck in traffic when you're stuck in traffic.
