I really like my Garmin, and my friend got a newer model that he really likes as well.
Are they PERFECT? No, they are not perfect; roads change all the time.
The screen is an electronic map. If you don't like the route, you can always look at the map on the screen and change your mind regarding a turn. The GPS will then update the route.
On the Garmin, with voice command, one can even tell it to, "Detour" and it will try to calculate a new route before you even get to the traffic backup you see ahead.
Older GPS units were very funny with the mistakes they made. Newer units are much better and I would not be without one.
Also, very important to go into the settings and tweak the route choices for your style of driving.
