I let the GPS take care of the long hauls, but do my own google-maps scouting of the fiddly bits around cities and at the end points. Both GPS maps and paper maps get out of date quickly.
Some cars with built-in maps and some GPS units have a feature called FM traffic that will pick up local signals (in the US, not Canada) that warn of current traffic backups. That's a handy feature.
