Just came back from a 6500 mile trip and our GPS gave us fits, found out do your homework before you leave and don't always trust your GPS, I have a Garman by the way, every one seems to have the same problem with them, Had a trucker tell me to do my homework before I left and don't totally rely on the GPS. What model of Garmin and how old is it and when was the last time you updated the map data in the device? Pretty hard slam on Garmin when you do not provide these details.
I remember being at an intersection one time where the Garmin said one thing, the map said one thing, the street signs said one thing, and the construction signs were ambiguous.
NOT one of the information items in any way agreed with each other.
ASFAIK, NO GPS device can ever be 100% because they can not know when new construction can start or fires, floods, whatever, will affect a route.
I give my Garmin a "voice command" to "detour" if I see a problem ahead, or just make an "deviation from route" and the Garmin takes only a few moments to give new advice (which can also be ignored if needed).
The overall benefits of a GPSR make them an essential tool to have.
Like any tool, understanding how to best use it is up to the experience of the end user.
