TX state inspection & being out of state for the next year

I've maintained Texas registration as I've roamed the country working in other states. Texas gives you three days after re-entering to the state to get an inspection done. I haven't been stopped on returning, but I usually keep receipts of the last couple of motel stays to be able to prove that I was out of state and heading back, however can't say for sure that it would be accepted.
