Under the weather rv'ing

We had been looking forward to our first trip outside our immediate area. We had reservations for 3 nights at Edisto Beach State Park. In the weeks leading up to the trip I'd had strep throat which required 2 Dr visits and DH had an infection in his leg which landed him in the ER. Come this past weekend we thought we were clear for our postponed trip.

After an uneventful drive to Edisto and some bumps setting up we had a relaxing first night.

Next morning - throat is a little sore, must be from sleeping with the windows open.

Nope, by that evening - very raw throat and homeward bound the next morning.

Fortunately, we were about 4 hours from home. How do you handle illness when on the road? I'm wondering because next year we hope to close the house for a couple of months and hit the road for an extended road trip.

    All is good info. Perhaps in non-tourist areas the walk-in clinics have better reputations than some of our local clinics. :E

    Like I mentioned we are normally very healthy but it was no fun having this, what I thought was a cleared up problem, rear its ugly head.

    I can see having a plan when we are going to be gone for more than a few days. Trust me, if we were halfway down Route 66 on our first big trip there would be no packing up and heading home. :B

    You do the same as you would at home..go to a clinic or doctor. As full-timers we have had multiple surgeries and even went through cancer treatments - all done while traveling. Don't let illness keep you home. :) By the way, this is a good reason why both partners should know how to drive. If you're a solo traveler this can all be accomplished also. There are many ways and many organizations to enlist help, if needed.

    We use walk in clinics. We like CVS Minute Clinic. They take my insurance for both the clinic and the pharmacy. We pay cash for DH if we can't find a VA clinic. Got our flu shots on the road this year at CVS. Have also used Walgreens Take Care Clinic, but Walgreens doesn't take my insurance for prescriptions. In addition, many food store pharmacies are now offering walk in clinic services for minor ailments. They will give you an antiobiotic if you had strep throat. I look for urgent care offices or walk in clinics. I don't like ER's unless it's a major problem.

    We frequently sleep with doors and windows open to listen to the ocean - wonderful this time of the year. Sometimes allergies do kick in and my throat will be a little raw for a couple of hours. Until now I never thought about my own health - rarely anything more than a sinus headache. DH will have to check with his DR about blood work etc. before we hit the road.

    This was annoying because we were going to stay put for several days to really get the feel of staying in the RV. :(

    We are fortunate to have great health insurance - I suppose I will find a website for local walk in clinics when we travel. At home I know the good ones and the tourist ones. ;)

    I figure if I am going to be sick, I would rather be sick camping!! I can sit in the lounge chair and look at the trees and listen to the birds. Like others above have said, walk-in clinics and ERs abound wherever.

    Had a meal at a locals suggested mexican restaurant. I had one dish different than everyone else and ended up too sick to get out of bed for 3 days. Luckily we were staying put in one place for 3 months.

    We carry a full medical kit as well and have a nationwide medical plan.

    There are ER's and walk-in clinics everywhere, so if an emergency arises it is easy to take care of. We also swing by our home state yearly to keep up with our regular doctors and maintenance issues. For teeth cleanings we just find a dentist wherever we happen to be and get it done there.

    We take a fully stocked medical kit. Sometimes things like that happen espectially if you are as old as we are. Be prepared. Take something to do if you are not feeling well but are better than laying around all the time.
    Open window if probably not the cause of sore throat. I have slept with an open window summer and winter for 75 years.

    We aren't full time (yet) but we also consider our tt home - I don't think there is anything I could do at our s&b that I can't take care of in the tt. Besides, I tend to get un-sick faster when in a beautiful location. The fresh air really works wonders.
