Care to explain? In 20-30 min my engine is close to its operating temp. How could I be doing more harm than good. I would much rather idle it up to temp than work/force it to temp.
For $50 - $75 you could have an electric tank heater that would do the same thing in an hour with zero cold idling.
A diesel typically make very little heat when idling, the reason a lot of modern diesels in light vehicles have a system that speeds up the idle to ~1,200 rpm and uses the turbo waste gate to constrict the exhaust so as to retain heat in the engine. Add to that the usually large and very efficient cooling systems and it points to idling as a very poor choice.
