To put out the slides. They are big and take a lot of power.
I think the dealer did not know much. The slides are DC and operate off the batteries. Further, on mine you CANNOT operate the slides with the engine running - this is to prevent some passenger from extending them while going down the road!
I have never needed other than battery power to operate my 3 slides over the last 8 years. Maybe living on borrowed time!
The manual for our HWH slides state to have the engine running to operate the slides and extend the jacks. The current draw without the engine running can pull the battery voltage down, and hence raise the current which caused increased heat and over time will damage the motor and possibly related wiring.
Also a DP needs to have the engine running to bring up the air pressure to release the air brake and to fill the air suspension. This can take up to five minutes. It is while the air is filling that I bring in the slides.
If the rig has come into the park in less than a few minutes from hard highway driving it may, just may, need a minute or so of idle to cool the turbo.
Modern diesel (and gasoline) engines do NOT need to be up to temperature before driving. They should be up to operating temp being worked hard such as charging up a long steep hill at full throttle.
