A rear bumper mounted spare is the first point of contact when backing up a trailer.
I don't agree that, that is a cut.
I have a Michelin in my driveway right now that failed in my driveway. IIRC it has sidewall damage just like the OP's tire.
If I have some time I will post up a picture when I get home and you can all have a look at it.
