Unusual events

Always on the hunt for the unusual to work into our itinerary of our trips. A blugrass festival is never to be missed but we also like motorsports. Not NASCAR. The local dirt track is always good entertainment no matter the class. Always looking for lawnmower racing but have not seen one yet. Mud bogging is a hoot. The skill of some skippers in docking competitions using 40' single engine IB commercial boats has to be seen to be appreciated at events like Tilghman Island Day, MD.

Does anyone know of a site that lists heavy equipment rodeos? Some of the clips on Youtube are quite amazing. There must be competitions.

    In Ely MN of a summer they have watercross races. They race snowmobiles on the lake. About the same time they have a blues festival.

    There is a town in OR that has a destruction derby with combines. I don't remember the name of the town but it is near Forrest Grove,OR

    Burlington, Vermont has an annual giant pumpkin regatta in early October (Columbus Day weekend, I think). It's exactly what it sounds like: a boat race where people paddle around in the hollowed out shells of giant pumpkins.

    You might search for antique tractor shows. We ave one in western PA that is really fun - they have tons of old steam and early gas engine tractors that run saws and other equipment. They also have parades, and weight pulling contests.

    Within an hours drive of my residence, there are at least 4 different dirt/oval tracks that have assorted races each weekend during the summer.

    Kingsport (TN) Speedway
    Volunteer (TN) Speedway
    Lonesome pine (VA) Raceway
    201 Speedway (KY)

    Each of these have "specialty" racing throughout the season.

    BTW, we are about as far as you can get from MD and still be in VA, about 7 hrs.

    Also in Minnesota we have

    Every Wednesday throughout the summer with the Nisswa Turtle Races! This event is a long standing tradition in the Nisswa community that draws a huge crowd each week for family fun.

    Nisswa is just north of Brainard

    There is a Steam and Gas Antique Tractor show near me that is a lot of fun to go to. Those giant 100+ year old Steam and Gasoline Tractors are a lot of fun to see in action. They have lots of static display antique engines too.
