Unusual events

Always on the hunt for the unusual to work into our itinerary of our trips. A blugrass festival is never to be missed but we also like motorsports. Not NASCAR. The local dirt track is always good entertainment no matter the class. Always looking for lawnmower racing but have not seen one yet. Mud bogging is a hoot. The skill of some skippers in docking competitions using 40' single engine IB commercial boats has to be seen to be appreciated at events like Tilghman Island Day, MD.

Does anyone know of a site that lists heavy equipment rodeos? Some of the clips on Youtube are quite amazing. There must be competitions.
  • Steam Tractor on Saw Mill at the Butterfield, MN Steam and Gas Engine show. I suddenly can't get the link thing to work so you will have to copy and paste these into your browser

  • The Albuquerque Balloon Festival we accidentally stumbled into and it was one of the coolest things we've been to. You literally stand in the middle of hundreds of balloons as they take off. Highly reccomend if you're in NM in September.
  • A number of the suggestions we have already done. The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta twice, a few state fairs with steam machinery & tractor pulls, some mud bogging, small dirt track racing, demo derbys, Oshkosh Air Adventure & lots of bluegrass festivals.

Done alot since 2007 but always looking for more.
  • The Lind, WA Combine Demolition Derby is fantastic!
    Clicky

Potholes State Park is nearby and has good camping.
  • You want unusual? If you don't mind a little cold, every March (1st or 2nd weekend, if I remember) Leadville, CO has Ski Joring. People on skis being pulled down the main drag behind galloping horses, taking jumps and scoring points. Very entertaining.
