Update Re Fridge Fire

For those of you who asked for news regarding my posting of a fridge fire last August, here's what happened: my Dometic fridge caught fire after I tried to run it on propane. The plastic exterior vent was a warped mess and the wiring was fried. I managed to put the fire out and luckily my fiberglass trailer was not damaged.

The fridge was only 2 years old and, although I have on rare occasion used it with propane, I usually run it on A/C. I had also opted for the warranty extension, but had never had the system inspected or tested.

Well, I brought the trailer to a service center and they took care of everything. Dometic replaced the entire unit, fridge included, with no charge for parts or labor. I only had to pay for some propane tubing and a new vent cover, which was not a Dometic product.

The technician later showed me a brass tube through which the propane flowed. It had a small hole in it! No wonder it caught fire! I asked him how that could happen and he just shrugged.

So anyway my advice to everyone is to have your system inspected once a year. Have it done at a service center so that you have the paperwork. And a warranty extension on new products, especially the fridge, is a good idea. Hope this helps.
  • So it was not the fridge that actually caught fire but the propane line devoleda hole in it?
And thanks for the update I remember this post
  • That's right; it was not the fridge but the feeder line that caught fire.
  • Was that hole near a bend in the tubing? Where it may have been damaged bending it? Or just a defective piece of tubing?

While plumbing stick houses for gas I have run into hard steel couplers, Ts, & elbows with pin holes. Normally they are found during the pressure test.
  • I've only looked at RV fridges casually while browsing RV parts store but I don't recall any of them ever coming with copper tubing for connecting to the propane tank. So if the hole in the tubing was the cause of the fire and if Dometic paid the entire repair under its warranty, then the tubing must have been internal to the fridge and not the tubing running from the fridge connector to the tank??

    :H

Cooper tube from main propane line feeds fridges, water heaters and furnaces

WHY Dmetic paid for it vs RV MFG. is confusing as RV MFG. does the install ------ not Dometic
  • I also wonder why Dometic paid for a new fridge if the issue was not cause by a part they supplied.

In any event, glad it worked out for you. It could have been so much worse!
  • In all likely hood Dometic authorized the repairs out of fear that it was something with their unit, and it wasn't till after the fridge was pulled out that the cause was discovered. At that point if it were me I'd just keep my mouth shut and let them pay as arraigned.
  • They probably paid because they already have enough trouble and residentials are starting to eat their lunch. The writing is on the wall or rather the fire damage is on the filon. Technologies come and go.
  • Just got back to the post. Yes, the hole was near a bend in the exterior feed line.
