US citizens buying vehicles in Canada

Hello -

I am John and I am new to Good Sam. I am interested in buying an RV that was produced and currently registered and licensed in Canada. Can this be done? Any tariffs or other expenses?

  • We had friends that bought a coach from the Canadian owner. He said never again. At the time, and I don't know if this is still true, Canada does not issue titles. Jumping through all the required hoops to get it registered and titled in the U.S. was a nightmare for him. I would do some more research and make inquiries before I jumped into it.

your registration and bill of sale make up your title in Canada.  so from the us website you will need some documents

"Collect documents like the bill of sale, foreign registration, and potentially a manufacturer's certificate of origin, depending on whether it's new or used."

then there are a whole bunch of import documents and such you need to do, but the "US" title is granted when you have finished the import paperwork.  there is a lot of it and then state stuff on top.  I have a couple friends who have had their units bought by people from the US who had no issues what so ever.  others hire an import broker so they don't have to do all the paperwork themselves.

  • You'll need to declare it to US customs and pay import duties and taxes for the US.  Is there something special about this RV that it can't be found in the US or something similar?

a lot of times they are much cheaper in Canada because of the dollar.  right now I think the spread is 1US = 1.38 CDN so you would quite a favorable price.

so today if I were to list my rv for 20000.00 CDN you would only need 14520.00 US to buy it.

It is the exact vehicle I have been looking for at a good price. Are the import duties and taxes a percentage of the purchase price or how are they determined ?

Depends. Our current president is likely making it more tough on you due to tariffs. US Customs and border patrol is a percentage but up to a max. You may want to contact the customs and border patrol and ask them directly. I imagine a lot of this is probably readily available via google.
