Using 4wd to slow down

I was reading the last issue of trailer life, the article a couple wrote about looking for a new truck. In the article they said that when going down a step grade they will put their truck in 4wd low and low gear to help slow down. I would like to know if this is common practice. I would have never thought about doing that, is this something that the trucks transmission can handle.
  • I do not know of any transfer cases that allow you to get into 4WD low over 5mph. You can try, but I don't think the electronics will let you.

I would be careful using any transfer case design 4WD on dry pavement. Consult your vehicle owners manual first as there are several types of systems.

Use a lower transmission gear, not transfer case to slow down long downhill areas. If you have an automatic in the last 20 years, they won't let you overrev.
  • I have never heard of that but that doesnt mean anything LOL. For me to go into 4low I would need to be stopped, then put it in. Any of the 4WD's i owned were the same way, there is only shift on the fly to go into 4Hi. I use the tow command system that keeps it at the speed i want to without using the brakes. I think all of the big 3 have something to do this, tow command system, exhaust braking etc...
  • Unless the truck has AWD (center differential) you'll eventually wind-up the drivetrain and start to hear a lot of grinding and popping sounds. All 4WD manufacturers caution against using 4WD on dry pavement.
  • Using a lower gear, fine. Using 4 low is not necessary. Probably not even a good idea unless you are descending a very steep decline on dirt, gravel, or rock. Certainly not needed no pavement.
  • that is one of the most asinine things I have heard!!! Talk about putting a horrible strain on 4x4 parts!

Gear down, same gear down as up and use brakes sparingly! If you are lucky enough to have an engine brake use it
