I don't see why it would be unsafe at all, but it may be clunky. Some on here have complained that the reducer sleeves are a little sloppy feeling (not an issues I've noticed with my stock reducer, which doesn't have any warnings on it).
You may as well give it a try since you have it. If it works, great. If it doesn't, buy a new WD hitch and sell the old one on Craigslist.
