utility vehicle

Does anyone here travel with a utility vehicle such as a Polaris or Can Am? Looking into using one in a street legal mode as an alternative to the motorcycles.

  • I have a RZR and a Canam quad. Neither are street legal. A friend has a street legal RZR he bought in Arizona, which is where I would buy, if I wanted a street legal toy. Have fun.
  • The OP asked about using a UTV in a street legal mode… to be used in a street legal mode they need to be governed to the lower speed no matter how fast they are capable of when not governed before sale…
With new speed limiting technology, you can have a digitally programmed UTV not to exceed 25 Mph at the time of sale or registration...
Trying to register them for faster speeds generally won’t fly because they lack the safety equipment required to be registered as a regular vehicle…

It helps to get a statement of origin or title that doesn’t say for off road use only, if you can…
But clearly the changed federal LSV law was designed for the accommodation of conversion of electric and gas powered vehicles to the LSV classification… states are changing to…

Is Your UTV Also Street Legal?

Many people don’t even know what a LSV is. Benched is here to explain all about it! LSVs are considered Low Speed Vehicles (also known as NVs or neighborhood vehicles). Most of the LSVs you see around are electric golf carts with less horse power or carrying capacity. This is where Benched comes to the rescue. Benches’ Bighorn UTV side x sides are considered low speed vehicles as well.

  • A UTV or an ATV are NOT classified as an LSV in any state that I know of. That is what the OP asked about, NOT an LSV......By the way, my UTV has a top speed of 60+ MPH, stock from the factory.

LSV's (electric vehicles) are not treated the same as a UTV in most states. Florida is a prime example. Do not try and use a UTV on any of the roads in Florida, but LSV's are common in many counties.

LSV are no longer defined as electric… although NEV (neighborhood electric vehicles) are in the same class as other LSV…

They are permitted for limited use by Federal and Florida law, although county or local governments can farther limit their use…

A new off road UTV can be equipped with the necessary street legal kit and governed to 25 MPH maximum speed and qualify as and be classified as a LSV…

Add AZ, UT, SD and ID to your list....All will have some restrictions, but you are allowed on the road, at least in those states.

  • Depends on local laws. Some states may allow, some definitely don't.
  • Yes, we do as our signature say's....However, you must be careful, as not all states, especially back east, will allow them to be used on the street.
