I'm fully aware that double towing in VA is illegal. I know that when stopped the LEO will make you leave one trailer and continue on without it. I'm wondering if that's the only consequence. Does any...

It may just be a small fine and a few hours lost having to unhook, and come back to retrieve your trailer. They may also impound the trailer and have you pay a very expensive towing bill.
If you were ever involved in an aaccident, even iif you were not at fault whatsoever.... The fact you were knowingly breaking to law.... They would come down hard on you, God forbid someone gets killed... You'd probably spend serious time in jail.
You can be the safest driver on the planet, and your skills may be top notch... But that teenager in the other Lane may not have your skill, and may cause you to be involved in an accident. I never worry about my own driving, it's the other yahoos on the road.
