NY only allows letters, numbers, and spaces, with certain letter/number combinations and swaps not allowed. Some years ago, my wife and I owned a mountaintop wildlife refuge named "Rockytop". One of our vehicles had the plate "ROCKYTOP", and the other one "R0CKYT0P". Since the state used the same die for both the 'O' and '0', the plates were identical. We had those plates for almost 10 years, and then one day we received a notice from the DMV that we had to turn in the one with the "0's" for another plate without the newly prohibited 'O' and '0' substitution. Since we were preparing to sell the property anyway, we just turned both plates in for standard plates and saved the extra fees.
