Keep in mind that Florida floods are different than most states- very different than a canyon flood. Not to diminish what those folks went (are going?) through, but they had hours of warning- the water just kept rising, but not that fast.
In states that are not as flat as a pool table, floods can come very much faster- fast enough that simply getting out to higher ground is the only task.
I've flooded here and was in the Big Thompson flood of 1976 (in Estes Park at the time)- I'll take a Florida flood any day!
