I'm going to pass along something to keep in the back of your minds: if you have to walk out in flood water - put on your toughest, most protective shoes/boots. NOT flipflops!!
I have a friend who is still recovering from a small puncture wound he got on the sole of his foot while helping a canoeist who was stuck in a log jam. That was 6 weeks ago. He STILL has an open, draining wound; plus now has side effects of tendonitis from the antibiotic he was given. That happened in a clean, cold Michigan river.
I can only imagine the stew of bacteria that is flood water. Protect yourself from scratches/punctures as much as possible - new hiking boots can always be purchased later.
