Virginia in the fall

In 2012 we spent about 1.5 weeks in Virginia in September. Had a horrible time with stink bugs -they were everywhere. My wife wants nothing to do with the mid Atlantic in the fall because of that.
Unfortunately, September is the best time for us to travel, so my question is: did we just have a rare bad experience or is that typical.
Is the fall worse, or have these little bugs ruined rving all summer in that area of the country.

  • Thank you for the reply. I've heard that they get worse as you get into the cooler fall temperatures. Does that seem to be the trend, and if so then can I assume that late August would be a better month to travel than September or October.
  • I think it also depends on the part of the state you are in. 2013 was supposedly a bad year for stink bugs as well, but we didn't have any here just south of DC, and I've not encountered them anywhere east of I-95.
  • It is my understanding that stink bugs have cycles. Some years they are worse than others.

We live in NC and they were bad last fall, The worst we had ever seen here. Every day, DW had to thump them off the screens.

I'm hoping with the colder temps this winter that the bugs will be milder this camping season.
