I think it just boils down to some people are contrarians and hate being told what to do. No rhyme nor reason to it, just that figures of authority get their hackles up and they react in a contrary manner. Doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense, but then human nature rarely does. :)
Kind of like telling some people that the speed of sound simply can't be broken, or that particular mountain can't be climbed. They will kill themselves, and others, trying to do what they've been told they can't do. No rhyme nor reason to it.
