wander

Is it normal for a motorhome to have a little wander.Do they just drive like this.Is it impossible to get them to track like a car or truck.

  • As lanerd stated go get it weighed. Then adjust the air pressure in your tires. My 87 Allegro wandered all over until I weighed it and lowered the pressure. My current C was about 15 psi over on each tire and I lowered the pressure and it improved greatly. Last summer we went on a 13 state tour and the only wandering I encountered was driving in wind and that was only bad in Kansas. So start with the cheap before spending $$$$$ on fixed. You also have to remember it won't drive like a car or truck. You driving a house on wheels. And unless you have a large DP you will have a different feel.

Amen! Our Class C felt "floaty", until we got it realigned. Now it handles like an E-150 van. Yes, wind still moves it a bit, but otherwise, it's rock-solid. No other steering add-ons needed.
  • The only trouble I ever have is in high winds blowing across the MH. The harder they blow the more muscle I use. So far so good; stayed on the road since 1993. Suspension is all stock original.

  • Our first motor home was a 35' Safari DP and having never driven one for more than a few miles, I too was having problem keeping the coach steering straight.

With some very helpful suggestions/recommendations from the good folks here, I finally determined that it was a two fold problem. First, the dealer had put 120 psi in all tires....lowered them down to about 100 psi made a big difference until I could get it weighed and put in correct pressure. Second, it was my inexperience that I was looking at the road too close to the front of the coach. Once I learned to look further out, I wasn't over correcting at every little movement.

Try these two recommendations first before you start piling on expensive mechanical changes. Get your mh weighed and then adjust the air pressure in each tire according to the tire mfg'ers specs (found on their website) and then set back in your seat and relax and enjoy the drive.

    Hope this helps

Mine came with Steer Safe installed. Also added the Henderson bell crank that John&Joey posted along with other front end parts and alignments. Bottom line is that It does not wander, I drive it with one hand like a car.
  • I've never owned a P chassis, but as I remember they had a bell crank issue that might be your problem. I saw your other post about the tail waging the dog so it must be a concern of yours.

    ON EDIT:

I'm always into doing the cheap easy stuff first, so prior to the above give the front end a good grease job. Sometimes it take a few greasing's to tighten things up. You may get lucky.
  • yes, on gas motorhomes, there are several products that will help! check out cw
  • "Wander" is a subjective term. When you drive a motor home you will have a little "wander" due to cross winds.
