What confused me is you kept refering to front. I would refer to the hitch as being in the front and the door is on the passenger side.

Port and starboard would work also.
Not sure if common usage, but I've seen curbside and roadside used as reference...I have to stop and pretend I'm sitting in driver's seats every time I come across that one :)
