Seems you have the wrong awning. Mine is indeed meant for rain. We always sit under the awning in the rain. I honestly thought that is why it's there. It keeps everything under it dry. It goes out when we set up, and down when we break camp. Just tilt it to one end, Tie it down, check the tie downs every now and then, and your good.
BTW I carport ours. Meaning. I set the support legs on the ground
It all really depends on what kind of awning you have and hopefully your owners manual or manufacturer's website can address your question. I have a power awning on my Class C and it CANNOT be tilted. Also, mine has a sticker on the rail that says NOT to put it in the "carport" position. Obviously as stated above, some awnings DO allow this. By the way, I have personally seen an awning collapse during a heavy rain and it tore it completely off the trailer before it could be retracted. I would strongly suggest you try to get specific information on your brand of awning and go from there. I know they can be easily retracted by pushing a button, but if half the stuff you own and bring with you is under the awning it is a lot of trouble to move all the chairs, grills, TV's, bikes etc. That is why I keep my "patio" area with a minimum of stuff underneath it.
