WD front end is light

After a few trips and weights I feel I need to adjust more weight to the front. (actually drops 60 lbs in the front with TT) driving into the wind shifts the truck around in the lane quite a bit. Suspension has been upgraded with new ball joints and shocks. Front rating is 3600lbs and weighing in at 3100 with TT. Which method gets better result for a fastway e2 hitch. Adding washers to tilt the head or raising the bars up a notch. as I have read the bars are supposed to be level With the frame as they are now so maybe adding washers is the next adjustment.

  • how much is too much angle or too many washers?
  • Personally I ALWAYS adjust the WDH so I get at least some ADDED weight on the steering wheels. I never let them get lighter. As you said, add washers. On my Equalizer I found on my rig that each washer added about 75# to the front TV axle, and took off 75# from the rear TV axle. I'm sure that is TV and TT dependant, but it is a place to start.
  • To answer your specific question, the proper adjustment to make would be to add washers to get more tilt on the hitch head. If you raise the L brackets, which you say are now set for level bars, the bars will then not lay flat on the brackets and contact them at the edge. This will reduce the sway control, make noise, and contribute to faster wear on the brackets and bars. It may also tend to make the bracket mounts "creep" or twist on the A frame.

  • Total weight for truck and trailer is about 12200. (13000) max. Trailer is at 6400 with gear truck 5800 loaded. I can post exact numbers later.
  • As well as getting weighed, what is the "payload" for your 1500? Might not be much left after loading everything and everybody up. Sixty pounds is nothing, the scales alone can be off 20 or more pounds. One passenger in the front seat could add sixty pounds to the front axle.

  • Either will transfer more weight up front. You are correct you want the bars to be relatively parallel so I would add some washers first to get more rearward tilt on the head.

60# vs unloaded is not that much weight loss at all so there may be other things at play here. I am sure others will ask you about your TV/TT and scaled weights soon so go ahead and get that ready!

    Edit:
I just looked at your profile.

You have a Bullet 295BHS being pulled with a 1500 Silverado, right?

That TT should be taking more than 60# off the front of your truck with no WD engaged or do you mean its still 60# light with WD hooked up? That isnt all that bad depending on how much total weight is being unloaded before the bars are hooked. List your full scale weights and I am sure others will chime in quickly.
