We lucked out - permission to camp on private property

I have a niece and she and her husband have a really nice small ranch in south Texas. Well stay about a week at thanksgiving until they and other family arrive. We’ll spend a week with them all and another few days once they leave. From there it’s just a short hop to Big Bend. We can use electric if we need it but usually just go solar. Next year I have to string an extension cord high enough the cows can’t chew on it. We can use it anytime we’re passing through.
It a setup hard that’s hard to beat!

It sure sounds a like like you found out about Boondocker Welcome. At a Harvest Hosts stop, you might have to buy a bottle of wine.

There is a LOCKED GATE. It is not open range like in the plains or desert. There is a narrow and winding lane down a steep approach with a gate. There is no way around the gate.

Being around other people is okay and a nice change on a long trip. I do not care for RV parks much at all. People seem more urban in their outlook. I like remote campgrounds and boondocking. I have met local people in a bar and had them offer a camp spot on their land. I was grateful to accept their invitation.

Once you get used to public land everywhere, it changes the way people camp.

Me too. I recall meeting a fisherman in a coastal campground, we spent an hour talking about his boat and catch. More than I would have expected, I find fellow campers approachable and enthusiastic about being neighbors in the campground. I am not a hermit. I just like the occasional opportunity for total peace and quiet.

OTOH, I like people. I like kids riding their bikes around and making noise and memories (makes me a little jealous). I enjoy engaging with other campers and have spent some of our most enjoyable times getting to know new friends around the campfire.
So what you discribe isn't our kind of camping but I hope you have a great time.

I have done this plenty of times. One of the great ways to camp.

There's a locked gate. Locals are well-aware of the ranch.
