We must have looked hungry...

We camped at Pismo Beach this weekend and had a good time. Traded the 100+ degree weather for the balmy 60's. DH is the overly friendly one and talks to all the neighbors. I came back from a bike ride with the kids and he's got an ice chest full of food. Apparently, the neighbors were leaving and left us with... Cheerios, Goldfish, pretzels, oatmeal, grapefruit, frosted flakes, froot loops, Granola, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, pork and beans, black beans and hot dog buns. Another set of neighbors brought extra fire wood and water balloons for the kids. I almost felt like we came home with more food than what we left with.

This is the first time it is happened to me. Have any of you had this type of experience before?
  • If I am going to put on a lot of miles to the next CG I too offer most of my food to fellow campers that I believe would benefit the most from a food offering. I also purge items from my MH often. I put them in the restroom with a free sign on them.
  • We never buy mayo, milk, eggs, or ice cream in the summer. We live in a resort area, next door is a duplex that gets rented by the week - Saturday to Saturday.
There are a lot of the same tenants that we have got to know over the years, and there are always new people ....

We try to help them enjoy there stay, and answer questions, and make suggestions on where to go and what to do.

Bottom line is when they are ready to leave at the end of their stay, they have a bunch of perishables they are only going to throw away or give away ...

    Waste not, want not .....
  • Just came back from a campground in Warren NH. Couple across from us with 5 kids camping in a tent. Big thunderstorm came through and they left. Unsure where they went, maybe a motel. They came back at about 2:00 next day and started packing up.
He had tarps and bikes and stuff tied down to the roof the Caravan and as they were driving out they called my wife over and said they had bought a mini adirondack chair for their kid. They saw our 3 year old daughter and said they couldn't fit it so they left it and said we could go get it. Before I found out they had left. I would have offered them a bungy cord to attach to one of the bikes on the roof. That's how I brought it home ;)
  • Yes-on both ends. We've given food away and we've received food. What goes around comes around.
  • Did you ever notice, no one has any 'leftover' beer they want to give away? :C
  • Last summer while camped at a local Provincial Park the Camp Host (volunteer program) came by for a visit.

She said that the people across from us were from Germany and were heading home the next day. They had given her a bunch of food that they weren't going to take back with them.

She then asked where we were from and when we told her we were locals she said "oh" and just walked away (empty handed).
  • Not too that extent but we have received food and wood from those leaving. Once by Zion a couple gave us two brand new camp chairs and some other odds and ends. They were from Holland and couldn't take them with them. Nice to share with others.
