Weather Issues on I40 This Year 2018?

We are moving from Ga to Northern Ca leaving March 26th. We have a 22ft Thor and will be towing a UHaul 6 X 12 trailer. Is there anyone traveling I40 through OK and West that has run into any weather issues like snow and ice, etc?

  • Thanks everyone. I think we will plan on using I20 to be safe.

    Have a blessed day.

I recently came from AZ back to Blairsville GA and used I-10 and I-20 because of the concerns about bad weather on I-40...I usually use 40. While it was 90 miles further on 10 & 20 I'll use them again over 40 as they are in much better shape than 40 with very little construction. You also have fewer climbs but the Dallas/Ft Worth traffic can be interesting unless you do it at midnight like I did.
    From Atlanta it's only 40 miles further on 10 & 20.
  • Snowing now in Flagstaff. Average snowfall in Flagstaff in March is 15". In April it is 7". This time of year the snow is accompanied by wind--often high winds. So be sure you allow yourself time to pull off the road for a day or two or take an alternate southerly route.
  • Wind will be the weather issue along I-40 in OK, TX, NM, AZ and CA. Overall the weather will be fine for travel by next week. You may see freezing temperatures at night from around Grants, NM to Ash Fork, AZ. So take freeze precautions if you need to stop in that stretch of I-40

It is snowing in Flagstaff, AZ and Gallup, NM today but should be sunny and warmer next week.
