If you do end up thinking about shocks, since you have 4400 lb 3" axles, you could do what I did in this photo. These are a replica of Monroe RB512 lower mounting brackets (NLA) made from standard tie plates and DOM tube. The Monroe RV shocks are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. These brackets will work with over or under-slung axles. While you are in there doing all the work, now would be an easier time to add them. You'll need to fab and well on upper brackets but that's pretty easy.
