Just brought my new rig home last weekend and noticed a similar type crack in the toilet. I took a pic and emailed it to the service department with the details. Its now documented and I'm covered. The important thing here is that now you know of the problem you don't do anything to cause further damage which would not be covered. Another vote for your friend, duct tape! As far as cause, who knows, could have been that way when they put it in.
