An alternative is to look for a residential construction site where there is a dumpster. Most carpenter crews are OK with someone grabbing a few pieces. I try to pick up some of the cuts laying around the site, as well. I also pick up any trash like nail boxes, plastic, lunch bags, etc. and get it into the dumpster. I try to make it a win-win for all involved.
Just remember, plywood, OSB, treated wood and painted wood all will release toxins when burned. Accidentally grab a piece of old creosote treated flooring board, toss it on your fire and see how quickly you and your neighbors will be longing for the good ole days of green wood.
