What age to replace tires?

My tires on our TT are just over 6 years old. Somehow I think the constant sitting and not moving as frequently as a car/truck tire will have an effect on the life of a TT tire. Just ordered 4 tires from my Jayco dealer this past Saturday.

Y'all do what you want. But after shredding a 4 year old tire. 4 years is as long as any tire will stay on my camper. Changing a TT tire along side a busy highway is no fun.

AND IF I curb one. It will come off sooner. As soon as it happens. Curbing is the main reason for blown tractor trailer tires, Same applies to RV tires.

Just because of our high heat in our area we have always replaced our tires at 4 years. However about 2 years ago we changed our minds on one of our cars and shortly before the 5 year mark we lost 2 tires in a months time. We are now back to replacing every 4 years. You will hear everything up to tires over ten years old and still good. But to quote Dirty Harry " Do you feel lucky" a rear tire going can and has caused thousands of dollars of damage a tire going can cause loss of control and a fatal accident.

The tires I had on the MH started going at 6 years. They were NOT covered and used only a few times a year for the last several years prior to the blowout. The tire that went was the one that received the most sun. Interestingly the spare was 16 years old (a Michelin) and was fine for several hundreds of miles after it was put in use. It was stored in an enclosed area in the MH. I replaced it when I replaced all the tires, but I'll bet that it would have lasted longer if kept in the enclosure.

I cover the tires now, and get the MH out at least every other month to condition the tires.

Maybe 12-15 years ago I seem to remember ( maybe not correctly) that most people were not going over 10 years old, no matter how good the tire looked.

Then last 10 years or so many people recommend not going over 7 years as many school dist and buses were not going over 7 years.

Lately, I’m seeing more and more people talk about 5 years.


Question...When did you personally replace a good looking tire due to age?

I had two tire failures between 5 and 6 years and replaced all tires at that time. I will replace again at 5 years or so.

I'm a seven year guy, except for utility trailers, and ten years on those.

The spare on my Jeep is 10 years old. It may last another 10 :C

Because we traveled full time hitting the road every week to 2 weeks I use '5 yrs' as my standard on the trailer tires.

Truck tires.......when they are worn out. That was 60,000 miles.

Having blown a total of 3 tires that were 6 -7 years old this winter. I am going to go with 5 from now on. I bought the rig last summer and it had a mish-mosh of tires on it. the oldest was 14 years old the newest was 4. I replaced anything over 8 years old and carried 2 spares the oldest tire on the rig was 7 years when I left home and looked good. The three that blew were all different makes. One blowout (the first) cost me a $1000.00 repair to my rig. It would have been cheaper to replace them all

I HOPE that we get what you pay for - so that the "better" tires don't need replacing just for the fun of it in 5 years regardless of the mileage on them and regardless of their tread depth.

i.e. How often do big rigs replace their tires and when they do, isn't it often just recapping instead of complete tire replacement?

My 4X4 pickup had the same set of top notch and over-spec'd tires on it for at least 12 years before I replaced them based on tread depth alone, with no cracking or other degradation evident other than just the worn tread.

Heavily loaded tires of really too-small a diameter so heat buildup is excessive may be a reason for internal material breakdown, however. We once had to replace a tire three times returning home from a hot summer camping trip because we were pulling a heavily loaded pop-top with way too small (in diameter) tires on it. IMHO, over-kill on tire ratings and sizes (larger diameter is always better) is the name of the game if you don't want to replace them often. Just "good enough" tires is not the way to go.
