What are the best tricks to get your tourist dollar

Last trip we were at a little tiny community maybe 700 people. The place that had a big signs advertising "award winning" clam chowder.

OH boy, we got to try some of that out.

I'm always on look out for good clam chowder and homemade smoked sausage. Believe it or not there are major "chowder competitions".

After having a bowl I was talking with the owner and told him their chowder was very good. Also asked what completion they entered. Was in national or state etc.

The owner looks at me and says, "Award came from Tourist Improvement Committee".

I said, "well, your signs are working well".

I thought I knew most of the ways to get your $$, but guess I don't.

    Our biggest pet peeve now is if going to a theme park (we avoid them but sometimes with visitors or kiddies on board or ......), they now search your bags and make you pay for a locker and lock your brought with you food/drinks in them. Pay for the locker and pay their elevated prices for food and drink within the park. That's just plain mean, for us and there has to be others that feel the same way, now they get maybe one tenth of the admissions out of us compared to having us visit more often when we weren't felt so nickel and dimed. Remember when parking was free and admissions were also more affordable?

    Homemade baked goods will separate me from my tourist dollar's. I've got to the point in life I don't need more (stuff) .

    My favorite has always been, "Voted best (fill in the category)"
    I always wonder, who did the voting?
    Did all the employees get to vote, or only management?

    I ignore (or make fun of) all of the proclamations of "best", "award winning", etc... I just don't believe them and ignore it.

    If they say "local cheese" though, they've got me. I'm a sucker for good cheese shops.

    Ha! We spent a month, or two, in Cedar Key, every winter. Before we left this year, we commented that stopping at Tony's for a bowl of Chowder is something we should probably do, since there are at least a dozen local signs and billboards proclaiming that it's the "best". Well to be charitable, hopefully we hit a bad batch. It was almost too salty to eat, and I could of spent a buck for Campbell's, dumped a shaker of salt in, and had an equal experience. Clams by the hundred at Southern Cross, killer shrimp and grits at Kona Joe's, and lots of other wonderful things about CK. Tony's, IMHO......not so much.

    In my area there are a lot of mom and pop farm stands with signs for home baked pies. I have seen the same delivery truck at each of them dropping off the pre-made pies.
    As long as they put them in their oven to bake them they can claim home baked.
    It just ain't home made !

    Another stand claimed 'all home grown produce'. My wife asked them how they grew the pineapple in New York ! The reply was , well it was on somebody's home.
