I traded in my 1997 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L regular cab, 5-speed auto, with 2WD for this grocery getter. Why? because at the time adding a drive shaft disconnect would have cost about $2,000 installed with no guarantee that the drive shaft would be vibration-free after modification.
On the smart car a $15 marine battery switch on the negative battery terminal is the only mod needed. At the time that I bought it the Roadmaster towbar, baseplate, and tail light kit cost me about $1,950 (installed).
I traded-in a 2-seater pickup for a 2-seater smart car that is less than half its weight. Do I miss the truck?
Absolutely, but I didn't want to have a $2,000 drive shaft mod done and risk ruining a perfectly good truck when that money can be put into a towbar package. The car keeps the rain off of my head, has ample storage behind the seats, and gets 3+ times the gas mileage than the truck.
