What can we take in RV across the Canadian border??

We have many different lists from as many sources as to what we can take across the border from Port Angeles to Victoria, B.C.
Has anyone gone across on the ferry lately? What can you NOT take?
How long is the wait through customs? Has anyone stayed at Ocean View RV Park? What is your opinion and is there a view of the water/ocean?
Thanks for any answers you can give.

Firewood is another item not to take across the border in either direction.

Correct. The dock at Port Angles often has a pile of firewood dropped by people when the workers for the Blackball tell them they cant take it with them.

In fact hauling firewood (none commercial, not heat treated, etc) between states is getting dicey. Many states have banned "importing" firewood from other states and some have restricted movement inside the state.
  • Quick question: has anyone declared a firearm before/upon crossing? My DH has a concealed carry permit and if/when we do this trip, I imagine we would have a firearm with us.

Curious if bringing a declared (and non prohibited) firearm across the boarder is a possibility?

Thanks, no debates. Just is it possible and have you done it? Hassles?
  • You can temporarily take certain firearms (non-prohibited) into Canada with proper declarations and forms.

From the US CBP website: Information on how to obtain the Possession and Acquisition License and forms can be obtained on the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Web site, or by calling call (800) 731-4000.

Also from the US CBP website: Prior to leaving the U.S., you should register your firearm at a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office. You will need a completed CBP Form 4457 to present a CBP officer upon your return to the U.S.
  • Thanks, I read that the other day, so it certainly seems possible. I'm curious if anyone has done it (passing through on the way to Alaska or on a few days jaunt to Canada) and did they run into any issues? Sorry if I am hijacking OP's question.... Thought this was be an appropriate place to ask.

If you were crossing with a handgun, and declared it, the best you can hope for is being turned back and not allowed in Canada at this time.

If you are crossing and did not declare it, and they find it; you will be turned back, probably never allowed in Canada again and your gun will be taken and never returned.

If you are crossing with a rife or shotgun (or pepper-spray for that matter) and tell them "self-defense", see above. The only acceptable answer is "I plan on hunting in Alaska" (Pepper-spray is allowed for anti-bear work only.

Some people have mailed their pistols to gun-shops in Alaska, picked them up there, then mailed them back.
  • If you don't have a passport, a passport card is cheaper and can be used going into and out of Canada.
