I bought a 2005 Ford ranger edge to tow. I called Ford customer service with the VIN number before I bought it and the guy on the other end of the phone read me the build sheet and told me it weighed 3471 when it left the factory without a hitch, tow hooks, etc. Anything the dealer or owner added would add to the base weight.
I tow it at 60 even though the owner's manual says maximum 55. I carry a 300lb motorcycle in the bed and have a rack to carry a 16ft canoe on the roof and over the top of the motorcycle. All up weight with a full tank of gas is right at 4000 pounds.
Special requirements for towing are:
Turn key to 1st position to unlock steering
Put transmission in neutral
Remove parking brake
I know it sounds stupidly simple but I have seen videos on YouTube where folks have forgot one of the three steps. Fingers crossed, it hasn't happened to me yet.
