I don't have a problem with peds having the right of way as long as it's safe for all parties involved. If a car/truck is coming down the road at any speed, I wait until the driver acknowledges that he/she has seen me and starts to slow down... then I go if I think it's safe. If I believe that the driver has not seen me, I stay on the sidewalk and wait. Getting hit with any vehicle (almost) no matter how fast or slow it's going is going to hurt.
I've tried to teach my boys that if, God forbid, they get killed in a crosswalk or one the multiple stop signs that cover the driving lane in front of stores these days, and they're waiting at the Pearly Gates, just try telling St. Peter ... "But it was his fault cause I had the right of way!". You're still dead.
