It was my understanding in Chicago that the pedestrian had the right of way in a crosswalk except when the pedestrian had a red light. I looked up the laws when I moved to Florida and learned that here there are what I call implied crosswalks---when a sidewalk meets a street there's a crosswalk across the street whether it's marked or not. That was surprising.
The town just north of me, St. Augustine Beach, has a beach road with a low speed limit and bins containing red flags at many of the crosswalks. You take a flag from the bin, brandish it as you cross the road and put the flag in the bin on the other side. Clever idea.
