The last thing you heard before the phone call faded away was your daughter pleading "hurry, Daddy, hurry!"
I know situations like these are rare, but I figure just because I'm not in a hurry that doesn't mean that nobody else has a right to be.
Happened to me. My then-toddler son was having trouble breathing. I knew it would take too long for an ambulance so I drove him to the ER myself. He was asthmatic (at the time - thankfully he has since grown out of it) and unbeknownst to us had also developed pneumonia. I rolled up behind someone going exactly the speed limit. Evidently they didn't like the rate of speed at which I approached them so they slowed down to about 10 under the limit. I tried to pass, they nailed it so I couldn't, so I had to cut back in behind them at which point they slowed back down to 10 under. When it opened up to 2 lanes, they went around 30 MPH over the 45 MPH limit to keep me behind them, then jammed on the brakes once it went back down to one lane. The ER was about a mile after that merge so I just sucked it up. I hope s/he felt like doody when they saw me pull into the ER, but probably not. They won the game.
My son was admitted immediately and spent Christmas in the hospital that year.
